Journey to the Centre of the Earth – Review

On Thursday 24th April 2014 Hive Radio had the enormous pleasure of attending the first night of Rick Wakeman’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, at Newcastle City Hall. A near capacity audience was totally captivated by what this reviewer can only describe as an epic performance. From the moment Rick came on stage, the whole evening was a joy to experience.
The first section was Rick with his hilarious recollections of life in the music business, and life on tour, particularly a meeting with the President of Brazil, in the 1970s. He played four songs which ended with The Beatles, Eleanor Rigby in the style of Prokofiev.
After a short break, it was into what we had all come to hear. Actor Philip Franks was our narrator, and with a stentorian voice, we began. I don’t need to comment on the music as we all know it very well, needless to say the performance was outstanding. Mention also to members of the string section who were head banging along to the rockier sections of music.
Many thanks to Valerie Potter at Bandana Management International, and to Rick himself for choosing to kick off this tour in Newcastle.
